The Ownership Mindset
In our previous article, you learned about mindset and how it affects your performance, starting with the growth mindset. Hopefully you also completed the quiz to get an idea of where your mindset sits.
It’s time to look at another kind of mindset that sits alongside your growth mindset and see how it can help you.
The ownership mindset
Success comes with an ownership mindset. So much so that we can often predict results just via language.
Eg. “My old trainer wasn’t very good, they didn’t change my macros for like 4 weeks.”
Truth be told, you didn’t hit your macros for 4 weeks so there were no changes needed - or maybe you did, and you were progressing, so still no need to change anything.
If you really want to see a difference in your results, it’s time to stop blaming others and empower yourself with ownership!
What is the ownership mindset?
The ownership mindset means taking responsibility for everything in your life.
Consider this for a minute: “Whether it’s your fault or not, it’s still your responsibility.”
Someone with an ownership mindset believes that any given situation is their responsibility, no matter how it came about. On the flip side, someone with a deflective mindset will always look for something external to blame.
Like the growth mindset, mastering the ownership mindset will positively impact what you get out of your training, your career, your relationships and your life. Taking responsibility will change your entire outlook and put an end to the excuses that are massively holding you back.
Why do you avoid the ownership mindset?
To best learn how to embrace the ownership mindset, you need to learn why you're not doing so already.
Truth be told, the main reason behind the reluctance to take responsibility is the ego. The ego’s main role is to prevent us from getting hurt. It is that voice that you hear and talk with in your head.
When you don’t get the result you want it’s much easier to blame the program or diet, or work or stress than to take responsibility. You say “I’ve just been so busy and I haven’t had time, and this program just doesn’t really seem to be getting me anywhere.”
The benefits of an ownership mindset
The ownership mindset will deliver you better outcomes 100% of the time. Paired with the growth mindset, you can double your results.
When you apply this mindset, you take responsibility for everything. You understand you can always improve, that failure is a chance to learn and you become unstoppable, regardless of your environment or your baseline talent.
An ownership mindset is key to perseverance and forward momentum. You won’t achieve any goals if you make excuses and stop putting in the effort needed because you decide it’s not your fault.
As an exercise, catch yourself when you blame others, or have a listen to how the people around you talk. If they’re always deflecting blame, they’re stuck in the wrong mindset.
